The Bahamas: Highborne Cay

Earlier this year, I went to the Bahamas for spring break, and let me tell you… there is nothing like it! This was the first trip where I was able to start recording my experiences and adventures along the way and here we are, me sharing that with you now!

Flying in to Nassau (the main island) we took a boat to a small island in the Northern part of the Exumas: Highborns Cay, where we stayed for our first four nights. The island was pretty small but felt so big at the same time. With only a couple houses on the island available to stay at, everything felt very secluded and private.

There were private beaches everywhere and trails throughout the whole island. My favorite beach was at the northern tip of the island that formed a huge cove. The water there was crystal clear and perfectly still. We had our own cabana and beach chairs in which we cooked our lunch and dinner there one day.

Near the marina there was a cute little bar that overlooked the sailboats the yachts that ancored on the outskirts of the Cay. The marina was home to dozens of nursesharks and we even saw a few bullsharks! However, do not fear the mariana was no where near the beach. The fishing was amazing too, we caught a few Maui Maui and Wahoo, which we made into some of the best ceviche I’ve ever had! Highborne Cay dosen’t have an instagram so I linked their website below instead if anyone is interested.

We were fortunate enough to have our own boat down there with us, but you can chart or rent boats to take you to other islands as well. We took the boat down to some other Cays farther down the Exumas for the day. There we went and had lunch at a small restraunt in Staniel Cay where I had a killer Ahi Tuna Poki bowl. The marina at Staniel Cay houses lots of nurse sharsk too which you could actually get down and pet them on a small step. I’ve gone ahead and linked Staniel Cay’s instagram below for more post or information regarding visitng there.

After lunch we went to Rachel’s Bubble Bath, which was this lagoon tucked back in Compass Cay, an island just North of Staniel Cay. The lagoon had a small barrier of rocks guarding it between the rough waves that would crash against the side of the rocks and spray the whole lagoon with mist. After that we went to Thunderball Cave which was a huge hollow rock surrounded and filled by natural reefs and only accessable by swimming under the rock itself. Coral and thousands of fish filled the cave and we even saw a couple sea turtles! One of the James Bond movies was actually filmed there. We finnished up our day outing by snorkeling at a sunken cartel plane. It was so much bigger than I couldve imagined and honestly one of the coolest things we did in my opinion!

Although I didn’t go to these next few places this past year, I did this same trip last year and felt the need to include them because they were super fun and all relatively close to these attractions.

One of the small islands just north of Highborne cay there is an island full of iguanas and you can feed them by putting fruit on a stick. I kid you not there were hundreds of them! Also in Compass Cay, the island with Rachel’s Bubble Bath, we swam with nurse sharks in the marina and that was one of the coolest things I’ve done in my life. You could pet the sharks and swim with them around the docks and something about just swimming with sharks is so cool to me. Lastly, the infamous pig island, and to be quite honest I actually hated this. I thought the pigs were gross and they’re kinda aggressive. It’s one of those things to check off the bucketlist but I wouldn’t bother going out of my way to see them again.

That wraps up my first official blog post! I hope y’all like it. I hope to do more of these as I travel this summer and for my other little journeys later in life. Thanks again for reading, and follow my instagram for more day to day content!
